Rwenzori, Uganda (Natural-processed)
Notes of: Merlot, Blackberry, Plum, Cane Sugar
Running along Uganda’s western border, the Rwenzori mountain range has quietly been making a name for itself as an up-and-coming region for the world’s finest specialty coees. On the ground, our partners at Genuine Origin have established receiving stations throughout the Rwenzori mountain range to facilitate coee cherry collection before transporting the lots to a centralized wet mill where processing (i.e. depulping, fermentation) can be carried out under careful supervision. The Rwenzori region is known specifically for its high-quality natural (a.k.a. dry process) coees. This particular lot was grown in altitudes ranging from 1300-1900masl and collected via Genuine Origin’s receiving stations–where farmers were paid double what they’re used to for “drugars” (commodity-grade Ugandan Arabica; typically of poor quality). Before this new infrastructure, much of the region’s green export was comprised of these drugar-grade coees. Not only has Rwenzori’s new receiving stations and wet mills elevated local coee quality vastly, its enabled surrounding farmers to fetch considerably higher prices for their export.
