superlatives: coffees we love!

Passionate producers are what makes our coffee special! At knockabout, It’s our mission to honor the hard work and practices of our farmers.

We consider these coffees to be among our superlatives, not only based upon cupping quality, but also the incredible stories we gather from origin, of producers who embrace stewardship and social responsibility toward their neighbors.

Cajamarca, Peru (washed)

$17.50

Central Café y Cacao del Perú is a non-governmental organization founded on 27th January 2003 with 25 small producers from Barro Negro Village, district of La Coipa.

Each producer finishes harvesting the ripe cherry at 5 pm, and then the cherries are washed, the floating cherries are separated. They are de-pulped and fermented in tanks. The fermentation takes place between 30-36 hours, and then they are washed three times to ensure that there is no presence of mucilage in the coffee, once washed the coffee is placed on trays in African beds for 20-25 days.

Rene Contreras grew up listening to the stories of his grandparents about how they formed what today is Finca Monte Verde, a beautiful family project, a legacy of sacrifice and passion from over 100 years of experience. Finca Monte Verde is a paradise among the clouds whose height allows us the appreciation of the fusion of neighboring country Guatemala and surrounded by majestic vegetation and fauna.

Questions?

  • At Knockabout, we work extremely hard to source delicious, memorable coffees.

When new inventory gets delivered, we’re hard at work profile-roasting the coffee to what we feel is its fullest potential—with the guiding principles of sweetness, balance and an overall pleasant tasting experience.

In short: the answer is no, we do not have dark roasts; but we do have what we feel are coffees roasted to the best versions of their selves, rather than coffees just roasted to a specific color.

  • Coffee only grows in the Tropics, which means that there are only certain countries that can produce coffee, but that still gives us a plenty of options! The immense biodiversity and unique terroir of each coffee-producing country is one of the things we find so exciting about sourcing. Here’s few of our favorite places we’ve sourced coffee from in the past year: Colombia (Antioquia region), Bolivia, Peru, El Salvador, Ethiopia (Guji Region), Indonesia, Burundi (Ngozi Region)

  • We sure don't like to think so! At Knockabout, we seek to build community and share "Specialty Coffee" with folks who maybe haven't tried it before. Creating educational, accessible and memorable tasting experiences is what we do!

We want to remove barriers to entry for people who want to taste really good and exciting coffees. We strive to make coffees that don't NEED cream and sugar.

  • At Knockabout, our coffee is always sourced equitably and responsibly, but we don't partake in the Fair Trade USA system—so let us explain!

We actually pay more to our partners without this certification. Fair Trade Certified and Fair Trade Organic Coffees have a price minimum of about $1.50/lb and $1.75/lb roughly at the time of this writing, which for many farmers is an upgrade!

However, because we are seeking premium products from smaller producers, we budget to pay between $2.50/lb and $7.00/lb for most of our offerings. This means that ensuring a minimum price below our quality-driven price is not valuable to many of the producers we work with.

The Fair Trade certification requires paying a fee every year to participate in the program, and the people we work with (and us) don't often get value from paying that fee, so we just choose to opt-out. We do, however, source our coffees first-and-foremost with the global community and well-being of our partners in mind! Check out some of the descriptions of the products in our store to see what ways it supports the coffee-producing community!
